Ajinomoto Foods North America, Inc. has dramatically expanded its recall of frozen food products to nearly 37 million pounds after discovering that glass fragments may be contaminating a wide range of ready-to-eat and not-ready-to-eat chicken and pork fried rice, ramen, and shu mai dumpling products. The recall was expanded on March 9, 2026, by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service.
What’s Being Recalled?
The expanded recall covers approximately 36,987,575 pounds of frozen products produced between October 21, 2024, and February 26, 2026. The recall includes 16 products sold under the brand names Ajinomoto, Kroger, Ling Ling, Tai Pei, and Trader Joe’s. Affected Trader Joe’s products include Chicken Fried Rice (Best By dates March 4, 2026, through February 10, 2027), Vegetable Fried Rice (Best By dates February 28, 2026, through November 19, 2026), Japanese Style Fried Rice (Best By dates February 28, 2026, through November 14, 2026), and Chicken Shu Mai (Best By dates March 13, 2026, through October 23, 2026). All recalled products bear establishment number P-18356, P-18356B, or P-47971 inside the USDA mark of inspection on the packaging. Best-by dates across all affected products range from February 28, 2026, through August 19, 2027. Products were shipped to retail locations nationwide.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
The recall was triggered after Ajinomoto received multiple consumer complaints about glass found in the products. An internal investigation identified contaminated carrots as the likely source of the glass fragments. Because the affected carrot ingredient was used across multiple product lines and brands, the recall expanded significantly beyond the original announcement. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service has classified this as a high-risk situation, as glass contamination poses a serious risk of injury if consumed.
What Should You Do?
Check your freezer immediately for any of the recalled products listed above. Do not consume them. Throw the products away or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. Trader Joe’s customers can return affected products to any store location for a full refund.
