Bakkavor, a Charlotte, North Carolina food manufacturer, has recalled pizza and focaccia bread products sold under multiple brand names after discovering that an ingredient supplier’s slow-roasted tomatoes may contain metal fragments. The recall was initiated on January 19, 2026, and was classified by the FDA as Class II on March 23, 2026, indicating the risk of serious harm is remote. No injuries have been reported.
What’s Being Recalled?
Four products across multiple brands are included in this recall, all containing the potentially contaminated slow-roasted tomatoes:
HelloFresh Basil Pesto & Mozzarella Pizza, 13.9 oz — UPC 8 57919 00785 5 — lot codes 20377537 (use by September 4, 2026) and 20377821 (use by September 5, 2026). Distributed directly to HelloFresh customers in 10 states.
Frederik’s by Meijer Slow Roasted Tomato & Shredded Parmesan Cheese Focaccia, 13.75 oz — UPC 7 13733 88387 0 — sold at Meijer stores.
Fresh & Simple Roasted Tomato & Parmesan Focaccia, 13.75 oz — UPC 8 50061 35318 4 — sold at Harris Teeter stores.
Trader Joe’s-branded focaccia products also sold in the same states. The HelloFresh pizza was distributed to customers in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, Texas, and Virginia.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
Bakkavor traced the contamination to a batch of slow-roasted tomatoes supplied by an ingredient vendor that contained small metal fragments. Because this tomato ingredient was shared across product lines, the contamination spread across several brands and retailers. Metal fragments in food pose a serious ingestion risk — small pieces can cause lacerations to the mouth, throat, and digestive tract, as well as internal injury if swallowed. HelloFresh notified affected customers directly, advising them to discard any Basil Pesto & Mozzarella Pizza received between October 8, 2025, and January 23, 2026.
What Should You Do?
Do not consume any of the recalled products. Check your refrigerator or freezer for the HelloFresh Basil Pesto & Mozzarella Pizza or any focaccia products matching the brand names and UPC codes listed above. If your product matches, throw it away immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. HelloFresh customers in the affected window should discard it even without a direct notification. For questions, contact Bakkavor or your retailer.
