Revival Animal Health of Orange City, Iowa, has voluntarily recalled Breeder’s Edge Foster Care Canine and Shelter’s Choice Canine Milk Replacers nationwide after an internal investigation found variable Vitamin D levels — resulting in both dangerously high and dangerously low amounts in some products. Two cases of rickets have been reported to date. Dogs that have consumed elevated Vitamin D levels may be at risk for vomiting, appetite loss, excessive thirst and urination, and kidney dysfunction.
What’s Being Recalled?
The recall covers seven product varieties sold nationwide through online retailers and pet stores, in resealable bags and 12-ounce jars. Affected products include Shelter’s Choice Canine Milk Replacer in 1 lb., 3.5 lb., and 8 lb. sizes (UPCs 817160011087, 817160011070, 817160011056) with best-by dates ranging from June 2026 through January 2028, and Breeder’s Edge Foster Care Canine Milk Replacer in 12 oz., 4.5 lb., 18 lb., and 20 lb. sizes (UPCs 817160010189, 817160010073, 817160011025, 817160010172) with best-by dates ranging from May 2026 through February 2028. Not all best-by dates within each product are affected — the full list of specific recalled dates is available on the FDA’s recall notice at fda.gov.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
Testing revealed inconsistent Vitamin D levels across production batches — with some products containing too much and others too little. This is particularly serious for newborn and young puppies who rely exclusively on milk replacer as their sole nutrition. Excessive Vitamin D can cause vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss; at very high levels it can lead to renal dysfunction. Insufficient Vitamin D can cause rickets, a bone development disorder — as seen in two confirmed cases. The products are used primarily for orphaned, rejected, or newborn puppies who cannot nurse.
