Why Was This Product Recalled?
During routine FDA surveillance sampling, one composite sample from lot C001730 tested positive for Salmonella species. Salmonella in raw pet food poses two risks: illness in animals that consume it and illness in humans who handle it. In pets, Salmonella can cause lethargy, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain — though some animals may show no symptoms while still carrying and shedding the bacteria. Human exposure most commonly occurs through inadequate hand washing after handling raw pet food or from contaminated preparation surfaces. Symptoms in humans include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, with severe cases potentially leading to bloodstream infections, endocarditis, or arthritis. Young children, elderly individuals, and immunocompromised people face the greatest risk of serious complications.
