Why Was This Product Recalled?
The recalled macaroni and cheese contains soy lecithin — a soy-derived food additive used as an emulsifier — not declared on the product label. Soy is one of the nine major food allergens recognized under federal law. People with soy allergies or sensitivities can experience reactions ranging from hives, digestive distress, and vomiting to severe anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening without immediate treatment. Because soy lecithin was not listed on the label, consumers with soy allergies would have had no way to identify the product as unsafe. Soy lecithin is widely used in prepared foods as an emulsifier, making it a common hidden allergen for soy-sensitive consumers who rely on precise label reading. The FDA’s Class II classification indicates serious adverse health consequences are remote, but temporary or medically reversible effects are possible.
What Should You Do?
Check your refrigerator for 20-ounce tubs of Park St. Deli Macaroni & Cheese from Aldi. Look for a lot code starting with “SUL” and match it against the list above. Do not eat the product if your lot code is included. Return it to your local Aldi store for a full refund. If you have a soy allergy and believe you consumed the recalled product, monitor for symptoms and contact your healthcare provider if you experience any reaction.
