A recall of certain Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips first announced in May 2026 has been upgraded to a Class I recall — the FDA’s most serious designation, meaning there is a reasonable probability that consuming the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death. Utz Quality Foods originally announced the recall on May 4, 2026, as a Class II action over Salmonella concerns tied to the California Dairies, Inc. milk powder contamination chain.
What’s Being Recalled?
Nine varieties of Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips remain under recall, all linked to dry milk powder supplied by California Dairies, Inc. Affected products include:
Zapp’s Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips — 1.5 oz, 2.5 oz, and 8 oz sizes. Best-by dates ranging from July 27 through August 31, 2026.
Zapp’s Brand Big Cheezy Potato Chips — 2.5 oz and 8 oz sizes. Best-by date August 31, 2026.
Zapp’s Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips — 1.5 oz, 60-count. Best-by dates August 3 and 10, 2026.
Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips — 2 oz. Best-by dates August 3 and 10, 2026.
Dirty Brand Maui Onion Potato Chips — 2 oz. Best-by date August 8, 2026.
Dirty Brand Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips — 2 oz. Best-by date August 31, 2026.
The best-by date and batch code are printed on the back of each bag.
Why Was This Recall Upgraded?
The FDA originally classified this recall as Class II, indicating the probability of serious harm was considered remote. The agency has now reclassified it to Class I — meaning it considers there to be a reasonable probability that consuming the recalled product could cause adverse health consequences or death. The recalled chips contain a seasoning ingredient derived from dry milk powder recalled by California Dairies, Inc. for potential Salmonella contamination. This is the same California Dairies contamination chain that has triggered recalls of at least nine other products, including Ghirardelli beverage mixes, Aldi and Walmart frozen pizzas, Blackstone seasoning, Kroger croutons, and Coffee Connexion Alfredo sauce.
