Kao USA has voluntarily recalled specific lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo after the product tested positive for Pluralibacter gergoviae — a bacterial contaminant that poses little risk to healthy individuals but can cause serious infection in people with weakened immune systems. The recall was issued July 1, 2026. No adverse events or injuries have been reported. The recall covers two bottle sizes sold at retailers and salons nationwide for approximately $52 and up, and the investigation into the full scope of the issue remains ongoing.
What’s Being Recalled?
The recall covers two sizes of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo, sold in purple bottles:
8.5 oz size — UPC 840035231242. Affected lot code: YR010556, printed in black on the bottom of the bottle.
33.8 oz size — UPC 840035231273. Affected lot codes: YR010566 and YR010576, printed in black on the bottom of the bottle.
Both sizes were manufactured between February 21 and February 26, 2026. The products were sold at retail stores and professional salons nationwide in the United States and Canada. Oribe shampoo is a premium hair care line retailing at approximately $52 for the 8.5 oz size. Kao USA has asked retail and salon partners to remove all affected lots from shelves and return them.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
Testing found Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria in the recalled shampoo. Pluralibacter gergoviae is a gram-negative bacterium that can be found in cosmetic products and in the environment. While it poses little medical risk to healthy people, individuals with weakened immune systems — including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV, and others with compromised immunity — may be more susceptible to infection. If the bacteria enters the body through broken skin on the scalp, eyes, or elsewhere, it can cause opportunistic infections that are difficult to treat in vulnerable populations.
What Should You Do?
Stop using the recalled Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo immediately, regardless of your health status. Check the lot code printed in black on the bottom of your bottle — if it reads YR010556 (8.5 oz) or YR010566 or YR010576 (33.8 oz), return the product to the retailer or salon where you purchased it.
