Maple Leaf Foods, Inc. of Lisle, Illinois, is recalling approximately 12,036 pounds of not-ready-to-eat smoked bacon that was imported from Canada without the benefit of import reinspection into the United States. The recall was announced July 24, 2026, by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service and classified as Class I — the agency’s highest risk level. No illnesses have been reported. The product was further distributed to Grocery Outlet distributors and retailers in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.
What’s Being Recalled?
Two bacon products are included in this recall, both sold in 12-ounce vacuum packages:
Royale Natural Applewood Smoked All Natural Uncured Bacon, Product of Canada — sell-by dates September 1, 2026 and September 7, 2026.
TOP VALU Uncured Hardwood Smoked Bacon, Product of Canada — sell-by dates September 1, 2026; September 2, 2026; September 4, 2026; September 5, 2026; and September 7, 2026.
The product bears Canadian establishment number “EST. 1” printed on the side of the package, and health certificate “2026-S732971612” on master case boxes. The recalled bacon was distributed to Grocery Outlet locations in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
The recall reason is unusually specific: the bacon was imported from Canada without the benefit of U.S. import reinspection. That is different from a recall that begins because inspectors found a pathogen, undeclared allergens, or visible contamination. Import reinspection is a required step in which USDA inspectors verify that imported meat products meet U.S. safety standards before distribution. Without that reinspection, the USDA cannot certify the product’s safety. The USDA issued its highest alert — a Class I recall — despite no confirmed illness, reflecting the seriousness of the procedural failure. This is a not-ready-to-eat product, meaning it must be cooked before consumption.
