The warning was issued after CPSC determined that infants restrained in these pillows can ingest milk or formula faster than they can safely swallow it, increasing the risk of choking, aspiration, and suffocation.
What Is an Infant Self-Feeding Pillow
Infant self-feeding pillows — also sometimes called hands-free feeding pillows — are devices that hold a bottle in place near an infant’s mouth so the parent does not need to hold the bottle during feeding. They are marketed primarily to parents who are multitasking, and are widely sold on Amazon and through baby specialty stores. They typically consist of a padded body pillow or cushion with an attached bottle holder that keeps the bottle at a fixed angle.
CPSC’s concern centers on two hazards. First, infants cannot pull away from the bottle if they are feeding too fast or need to pause — the bottle holder keeps the bottle in a fixed position regardless of what the baby does. Second, some designs position the infant at an angle or incline that is unsafe for feeding, increasing the risk of milk entering the lungs.
