Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. of Brooklyn, New York, is voluntarily recalling 8-ounce packages of Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted the company announcement on October 16, 2026. The smoked salmon was distributed in New York, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. The product is sold frozen with a best-before date more than a year away, so packages may still be in home freezers.
What’s Being Recalled?
The recall covers 227-gram (8-ounce) vacuum-sealed plastic packages of Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced, a product of Latvia. The recalled packages carry UPC code 4751048940099, lot number D080-148, and a best-before date of 27.11.2027. That date is written in the European day-month-year format and means November 27, 2027. The brand name appears on the label as “STARFISH SEAFOODD.” Krasnyi Oktyabr is a wholesale distributor and did not make the salmon, so the product may have been sold at a variety of grocery stores and specialty markets in the six affected states.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
The possible contamination was found through product sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people may experience high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, stomach pain, and diarrhea. Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. Cold smoked salmon is not cooked before eating, which is why ready-to-eat seafood like this is a particular concern for Listeria. No illnesses have been reported so far.
What Should You Do?
Check your freezer and refrigerator for packages of Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced with the lot number and best-before date listed above. Do not eat the product. Return it to the store where you bought it for a full refund. The company has asked the stores it supplies to stop selling the salmon and remove any remaining inventory. Consumers with questions can contact Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. at (718) 858-6720, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern.
