Portable bed rails are marketed as safety aids for older adults — but the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns they have killed at least 18 people and injured countless more. Since 2021, CPSC has recalled more than 3 million adult portable bed rails through nine recalls and safety warning notices. CPSC data show that 90% of injuries associated with adult portable bed rails are from entrapment of the head, chest, or neck — and the hazard is often invisible to the person using the product and to their caregivers.
How Bed Rails Cause Death
When a bed rail is attached to a bed, users can become entrapped within the rail itself or between the rail and the side of the mattress. This creates an asphyxiation hazard that can result in death — often while the person is sleeping and unable to call for help. Recent deaths reported to CPSC include an 81-year-old woman in Ohio, a 97-year-old man in Texas, and a 93-year-old man in Florida — all of whom died after becoming entrapped in bed rails purchased from well-known retailers including Amazon, Walmart, and medical supply stores.
Recalled Brands to Stop Using Immediately
CPSC has issued recalls and safety warnings against multiple brands of adult portable bed rails in recent years, including:
- OasisSpace bed rails (models F042, F127, G132, and G286) — sold on OasisSpace.com, Amazon, and Walmart from July 2019 through February 2025
- Vive Health bed rails (multiple models) — sold at medical supply stores and online
- Medline Industries Bed Assist Bar models MDS6800BA and MDS6800BAH — 1.5 million units recalled
- Sangohe bed rails (models 504E and 504Q)
- ELENKER bed rails (models HFK-5115, HFK-5116, and HFK-5124)
Consumers who own any of these products should immediately stop using them and contact the manufacturer for a refund. Do not sell or give away recalled bed rails.
What You Should Do
- Check SaferProducts.gov to verify whether your bed rail brand or model has been recalled.
- If you purchase a new bed rail, make sure it complies with CPSC’s mandatory safety standard for adult portable bed rails, which took effect in January 2023.
- Carefully monitor anyone at risk for entrapment, particularly those with cognitive impairment, when using a bed rail.
- If an incident occurs, report it immediately at SaferProducts.gov or call CPSC’s Hotline at 800-638-2772.
