Generac Power Systems of Genesee, Wisconsin, has recalled approximately 149,400 portable generators after discovering that gasoline can leak from the carburetor when the generator is first filled with fuel, creating a serious fire and burn hazard. The recall was announced April 16, 2026. Generac has received 114 reports of fuel leaks. No injuries have been reported. About 51,500 of the affected units were sold to consumers; the remainder went through commercial channels.
What’s Being Recalled?
The recall covers 12 models of Generac portable generators sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s, and other home improvement and hardware stores nationwide, and online, from May 2025 through February 2026 for between $600 and $1,300. The recalled generators have an orange and black cover and are housed in a steel-tube frame with two wheels on the back. The model number and serial number are printed on a label on the side of the unit. Affected model types include the GP3600, GP4000DF, GP6500, GP6500E, GP6500CO, GP8000E, GP9200E, and GP9500ETF. Not all serial numbers within each model type are included, so owners must verify their specific unit at generac.com/about/recalls/GP-Carburetor.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
When first filling the recalled generators with gasoline, fuel can leak from the carburetor before the engine is ever started — at the exact moment a user would not expect a hazard. Leaking gasoline near a generator’s engine and exhaust poses a risk of fire, severe burns, and death. The defect is specific to initial fueling: generators that have already been filled with enough gasoline to move the fuel gauge off “E” and operated without any leakage are not at risk from this defect and can continue to be used safely.
What Should You Do?
If your Generac portable generator has never been filled with fuel, or if it leaked gasoline during filling, stop using it immediately. Go to generac.com/about/recalls/GP-Carburetor to enter your model and serial number and confirm whether your unit is included. If it is, contact a Generac dealer to arrange a free carburetor repair at the dealer’s location. Do not attempt the repair yourself. Generators that have been filled and used without any leakage are safe to continue using. Contact Generac at 800-396-9951, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT.
