American Honda Motor Co. has recalled 880,514 Honda and Acura vehicles after the rear subframe was found to corrode at suspension mounting points when exposed to road salt — weakening the attachment points for rear suspension components and potentially causing them to fracture and fail while driving. The recall was announced June 4, 2026, under NHTSA campaign number 26V367000. No injuries, deaths, or warranty claims have been reported. Owner notification letters are expected July 7, 2026. VINs are searchable at NHTSA.gov as of today.
What’s Being Recalled?
The recall covers four Honda and Acura models sold in 23 states and Washington, D.C., where de-icing road salt is commonly used:
2016–2022 Honda Pilot SUVs 2017–2023 Honda Ridgeline pickup trucks 2019–2023 Honda Passport SUVs 2014–2020 Acura MDX SUVs
Affected states include Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C. Honda estimates approximately 1% of recalled vehicles actually have the defect. Owners can confirm whether their vehicle is included by entering their VIN at NHTSA.gov or at recalls.honda.com or recalls.acura.com.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
Honda traced the defect to a coating applied to the rear subframe during production. Where the coating was applied improperly, paint can peel away and leave bare metal exposed to moisture and road salt. Over time, corrosion develops at the mounting points where the rear suspension attaches to the subframe. As the corrosion worsens, the metal thins and can fracture, causing rear suspension components — such as the rear control arm — to separate or fail unexpectedly. Loss of a rear suspension component while driving can cause sudden instability and loss of vehicle control, raising the risk of a serious crash.
What Should You Do?
Do not wait for the July 7 notification letter — check your VIN now at NHTSA.gov, recalls.honda.com, or recalls.acura.com. Take your vehicle to a Honda or Acura dealer for a free inspection of the rear subframe. Depending on the condition found, dealers will either install a free rear subframe reinforcement kit or repair or replace rear subframe components entirely at no cost.
