Horizon Organic Dairy has voluntarily recalled 53,760 cases of its shelf-stable 1% chocolate milk 8-ounce cartons after discovering a packaging seal issue that can trigger premature spoilage. The recall was initiated August 7, 2026. No illnesses have been reported. This is the company’s third recall since January 2025 — two previous recalls in early 2025 and May 2026 involved the same spoilage concern.
What’s Being Recalled?
Two package configurations of Horizon Organic shelf-stable 1% chocolate milk are included:
12-count pack — UPC 742365002700. Best-by dates: January 28, 30, 31, 2027; February 1, 2, 3, 2027.
18-count pack — UPC 742365208867. Best-by dates: January 31, 2027; February 1, 2, 2027.
The recalled cartons were distributed nationwide, though Horizon has not released a retailer-specific breakdown. The cartons are shelf-stable Tetra Pak boxes and may be stored in pantries rather than refrigerators.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
A packaging seal issue was identified as the cause — the defect can cause the product packaging to appear bloated, and the contents may be subject to premature spoilage, potentially giving the milk an unpleasant taste, odor, and/or texture. Consumer complaints about bloated packaging and spoiled contents prompted the recall. A quality assurance investigation is ongoing.
