Major Rugby, also known as Major Pharmaceuticals, has issued a nationwide recall of 12 levothyroxine sodium tablet packages after the medication was found to be subpotent — meaning the tablets may deliver less active medication than the prescribed dose. The recall was announced July 2026 and classified as Class II by the FDA. No adverse events have been reported. The manufacturer states that taking the recalled tablets “is not likely to cause adverse health effects,” but recommends returning them and consulting a doctor for replacements. Tablets are sold under the Major and Cardinal brand names and were distributed nationwide beginning in January 2025.

Why Was This Product Recalled?
The recalled tablets are subpotent — they contain less active levothyroxine than labeled. Levothyroxine is a synthetic thyroid hormone used to treat hypothyroidism, goiters, and certain thyroid cancers, taken daily by an estimated 40 million Americans. While taking a subpotent tablet is unlikely to cause an immediate adverse event, consistently undertreated hypothyroidism can cause fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, depression, cold intolerance, and in severe long-term cases, heart disease. Patients who were stable on their current dose may notice symptoms returning if their medication is less effective than expected.
What Should You Do?
Do not stop taking levothyroxine without first consulting your prescribing doctor or pharmacist — abrupt discontinuation can cause thyroid levels to drop. Check the lot number on your prescription bottle against the list above. If your bottle is affected, contact your pharmacy to arrange a replacement from an unaffected lot.
