The CDC and public health officials in several states are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to jalapeño peppers. As of August 5, 2026, 345 cases have been confirmed across 27 states, with 36 hospitalizations and no deaths reported.
What Is The Source?
Epidemiologic and traceback data show that jalapeño peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors are the source of this multistate outbreak. Coast Citrus Distributors has agreed to recall the affected jalapeño peppers. After being notified about the outbreak, Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA stopped serving affected jalapeño peppers. The CDC and FDA do not consider there to be a current ongoing risk from these establishments to consumers in this outbreak. The FDA is still determining whether affected jalapeños also reached grocery stores — if they did, additional recalls may be announced.
Who Is At Risk And What Are The Symptoms?
Most people infected with Salmonella experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Symptoms usually start 6 hours to 6 days after swallowing the bacteria. Most people recover without treatment after 4 to 7 days. Some people — especially children younger than 5 years, adults 65 years and older, and people with weakened immune systems — may experience more severe illnesses that require medical treatment or hospitalization.
What Should You Do?
Coast Citrus Distributors jalapeño peppers were primarily distributed to restaurants or wholesale. Check with your place of purchase to confirm the source of jalapeño peppers. If you have recalled jalapeño peppers at home, do not eat them. Call your healthcare provider if you develop diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F, diarrhea for more than 3 days, bloody diarrhea, inability to keep liquids down, or signs of dehydration.
