Padded crib bumpers have been federally banned in the United States since 2022 — and they are still being sold to unsuspecting parents on TikTok Shop and other online platforms. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a series of urgent warnings against padded crib bumpers sold by sellers including CPLRECR, VBauya, and others operating through TikTok Shop, all of which can obstruct an infant’s breathing and cause suffocation. The sellers have been unresponsive to CPSC’s requests to recall their products.
Why Crib Bumpers Were Banned
Padded crib bumpers were banned under the Safe Sleep for Babies Act, signed into law in 2022, based on decades of evidence linking them to infant deaths. Bumpers can obstruct an infant’s airway when a baby’s face presses against the padding. Infants lack the motor control to turn away from soft objects blocking their breathing, meaning a bumper that looks safe can become fatal quickly and without warning.
What Is Still Being Sold Right Now
CPSC has issued warnings against multiple padded crib bumpers currently circulating on TikTok Shop and other platforms, including products sold by CPLRECR and VBauya, both based in Hong Kong. The products come in various patterns including forest animal, pink tree, blue tree, fawn, and plaid designs, and carry no distinguishable safety markings or labels. Neither seller has cooperated with CPSC’s recall requests.
What You Should Do
- Remove any padded crib bumper from your baby’s sleeping environment immediately and dispose of it.
- Do not sell or give away a padded crib bumper — it is a banned hazardous product under federal law.
- The only safe items in an infant’s sleep space are a firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet. No blankets, pillows, positioners, bumpers, or soft items of any kind.
- Always place infants on their back to sleep, in a crib, bassinet, or play yard.
- If you purchased a crib bumper on TikTok Shop or another online marketplace, stop using it immediately.
