Peeled Garlic Recalled Over Botulism Risk After Improper Storage Temperatures

Product Recall

The FDA has issued a Class I recall — its highest and most serious classification — for Christopher Ranch Peeled Garlic sold at Tops grocery stores in New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont after the product was found to have been stored at temperatures that could allow botulism-causing bacteria to grow. The recall was announced March 27, 2026, and covers all best-by dates. Class I signals a reasonable probability the product could cause serious health consequences or death.

What’s Being Recalled?

The recalled product is Christopher Ranch Peeled Garlic, sold in 6-ounce containers at Tops grocery store locations in New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. Two UPC codes are affected: 00068826753408 and 00071894000005, and all best-by dates are included — there is no safe lot to check for. If you purchased Christopher Ranch Peeled Garlic in a 6-ounce container from a Tops store in any of the three affected states, your product is considered recalled regardless of the expiration date on the package.

Why Was This Product Recalled?

Peeled garlic is a low-acid food that must be kept at near-freezing temperatures — between 32 and 37 degrees Fahrenheit — to prevent the growth of Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that produces botulism toxin. The recalled product was stored in open-air coolers that could not reach or maintain the required temperature range, creating conditions for botulism growth. Critically, contaminated food typically shows no visible signs of spoilage — the garlic may look, smell, and taste completely normal. Botulism is a rare but potentially fatal form of food poisoning. According to the CDC, the disease causes death in approximately 5 to 10 percent of cases. Symptoms can appear anywhere from six hours to two weeks after consumption and include difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, blurred or double vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, and muscle weakness. The Tops store notice warned directly: eating the food “may cause health problems or even death.”

What Should You Do?

If you purchased Christopher Ranch Peeled Garlic from a Tops store in New York, Pennsylvania, or Vermont, do not consume it under any circumstances. Return it to your Tops store for a full refund with proof of purchase. If you have already consumed the garlic and are experiencing any botulism symptoms, particularly difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care immediately. Contact your healthcare provider with any concerns about potential exposure.
