Shield Line Recalls 8,420 MedPride Baby Oil Bottles Over Child Poisoning Risk From Non-Child-Resistant Packaging

Shield Line LLC of Branchburg, New Jersey, has recalled approximately 8,420 MedPride Baby Oil bottles after the CPSC determined the packaging lacks the child-resistant closure required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. If a young child opens the bottle and ingests the contents, the low-viscosity hydrocarbons in baby oil can be aspirated into the lungs, causing chemical pneumonia and potentially fatal pulmonary damage. The recall was announced June 25, 2026. No injuries have been reported.

What’s Being Recalled?

The recalled product is MedPride Baby Oil, sold in a clear bottle with a pink cap and white and pink front and back labels. The front label bears the “MedPride” logo with “Baby Oil” in pink lettering, “Helps smooth, soften & moisturize skin,” and “Hypoallergenic” in blue lettering. The back label contains directions, warnings, and manufacturer information in blue lettering. The baby oil was sold at discount and medical supply stores in the New York tri-state area — including 1$ Zone and Yong Tai Discount — and on Amazon by HL Medical, from November 2025 through March 2026 for approximately $8.

Why Was This Product Recalled?

Baby oil contains low-viscosity hydrocarbons — petroleum distillates — which federal law requires to be sold in child-resistant packaging under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. The MedPride Baby Oil bottles do not have child-resistant closures and can be easily opened by young children. If a child swallows baby oil, the liquid’s low viscosity makes it extremely easy to aspirate — meaning it can slip into the airway and lungs rather than the stomach, particularly in the natural body position of a young child drinking from a bottle. When petroleum distillates enter the lungs, they cause chemical pneumonia and pulmonary damage that can be fatal even with prompt treatment.
