Tesla has recalled Cybertruck vehicles after identifying a brake rotor defect that could eventually cause wheel studs to separate from the hub — potentially allowing a wheel to detach while driving. The recall was announced in coordination with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in May 2026. No crashes, injuries, or fatalities have been reported. Tesla initiated the recall after tracing the root cause to pre-production testing and confirming one real-world cracked rotor case in October 2025.
What’s Being Recalled?
The recall covers 173 Cybertruck vehicles equipped with the base 18-inch steel wheels, produced between 2024 and 2026. NHTSA has been notified and an official recall number has been assigned. Owners can verify whether their specific vehicle is included by entering their 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Tesla plans to mail recall notification letters to affected owners beginning June 20, 2026. All Tesla stores and service centers were notified of the recall on April 20, 2026.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
The defect originates in the wheel hub and bearing geometry, which places elevated stress on the stud holes in the brake rotor under harder road conditions. Over time, this stress can crack the stud holes. If the cracks worsen, a wheel stud may eventually separate from the hub — raising the risk of partial or complete wheel detachment while driving. Tesla traced the issue to pre-production testing that flagged the hub geometry concern. Planned durability improvements were not incorporated when production started August 28, 2025, due to a change management error. Tesla confirmed the defect after a single customer reported braking vibrations in October 2025, and cracked brake rotors were found during a service inspection. As of April 14, Tesla had identified three warranty claims potentially related to the condition.
What Should You Do?
Watch for early warning signs: braking vibrations or unusual noises from the wheels while driving. If you experience these symptoms, contact a Tesla service center promptly. Do not wait for the June 20 notification letter — check your VIN now at nhtsa.gov/recalls. The repair will be performed at no cost at any Tesla store or service center. For questions, contact Tesla customer service through your Tesla app or at tesla.com.
