Thermos Recalls 8.2 Million Stainless King Food Jars And Sportsman Bottles Over Stopper That Can Eject Forcefully

Product Recall

Thermos LLC of Schaumburg, Illinois, has recalled approximately 8.2 million Stainless King Food Jars and Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles after the stopper was found to forcefully eject when opened after storing perishable food or beverages for an extended period. The recall was announced April 30, 2026. Thermos has received 27 reports of consumers struck by an ejecting stopper, with impact and laceration injuries requiring medical attention in multiple cases. Three consumers have suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye.

What’s Being Recalled?

The recall covers three models sold at Target, Walmart, and other retailers nationwide and online from approximately March 2008 through July 2024 for about $30:

Thermos Stainless King 16-oz Food Jar, model SK3000 — manufactured before July 2023. Thermos Stainless King 24-oz Food Jar, model SK3020 — manufactured before July 2023. Thermos Sportsman 40-oz Food & Beverage Bottle, model SK3010 — all units.

The model number is printed on the bottom of the container, and the Thermos trademark appears on the side. SK3000 and SK3020 containers manufactured from July 2023 onward already include a pressure relief stopper and are not affected. The SK3010 Bottle has no safe version and is recalled in its entirety.

Why Was This Product Recalled?

The recalled containers lack a pressure relief feature in the center of the stopper. When perishable contents begin to decompose, gases build up inside. Without a pressure relief mechanism, this pressure can eject the stopper with significant force upon opening. The stopper can strike the user in the face, eyes, or body. Three consumers have suffered permanent vision loss from stopper impacts to the eye.

What Should You Do?

Stop using the recalled containers immediately. Do not open any recalled container before receiving the replacement stopper. Contact Thermos for a free remedy. For SK3000 and SK3020 Food Jars, Thermos will send a free replacement stopper — you will be asked to dispose of the old stopper and submit a photo. For SK3010 Bottles, Thermos will send a prepaid shipping label to return the bottle for a full replacement.
