Utz Quality Foods Recalls Certain Zapp’s And Dirty Potato Chips Nationwide Over Salmonella Risk In Seasoning

Product Recall

Utz Quality Foods, LLC of Hanover, Pennsylvania, has voluntarily recalled nine varieties of Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips after being notified that a seasoning ingredient containing dry milk powder — sourced from California Dairies, Inc. — may contain Salmonella. The recall was announced May 4, 2026. No illnesses have been reported. The seasoning batches tested negative for Salmonella prior to use, but Utz is recalling the products precautionarily following the California Dairies supplier recall.

What’s Being Recalled?

Nine product varieties are included across three flavor lines sold at retail stores nationwide:

Zapp’s Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips — 1.5 oz, 2.5 oz, and 8 oz sizes. Affected best-by dates range from July 27 through August 31, 2026.

Zapp’s Big Cheezy Potato Chips — 2.5 oz and 8 oz sizes. Best-by date August 31, 2026.

Zapp’s Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips — 1.5 oz, 60-count pack only. Best-by dates August 3 and 10, 2026.

Dirty Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips — 2 oz only. Best-by dates August 3 and 10, 2026.

Dirty Maui Onion Potato Chips — 2 oz only. Best-by date August 8, 2026.

Dirty Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips — 2 oz only. Best-by date August 31, 2026.

The best-by date and batch code are printed on the back of each bag. No other Utz products are included.

Why Was This Product Recalled?

The recall traces back to dry milk powder supplied by California Dairies, Inc., which issued its own recall over potential Salmonella contamination — the same supplier recall that recently triggered a recall of Ghirardelli powdered beverage mixes. Utz was notified that a seasoning ingredient used in the affected chip varieties may contain Salmonella from this source. Notably, the affected seasoning batches tested negative for Salmonella before use; this recall is precautionary. Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, and can cause serious or fatal illness in young children, elderly individuals, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

What Should You Do?

Do not eat any of the recalled chip varieties if your bags carry the best-by dates listed above. Throw the product away or return it to the store where you purchased it. For questions or refunds, contact Utz Customer Care at 1-877-423-0149, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.
