Walmart is recalling approximately 165,000 Mainstays 9-Drawer Fabric Dressers after the CPSC determined the units are unstable when not anchored to the wall and fail to meet federal safety standards — posing a tip-over and entrapment risk that can cause serious injury or death to children. The recall was announced June 2, 2026. No injuries or incidents have been reported. The dressers were sold at Walmart stores nationwide and on Walmart.com from September 2023 through March 2026 for about $80.
What’s Being Recalled?
The recalled product is the Mainstays 9-Drawer Fabric Dresser, a freestanding clothing storage unit with a black metal frame and nine fabric drawers in brown or black with handles. The unit measures approximately 40 inches long by 13.75 inches wide by 45 inches tall and weighs 32 pounds. The tracking/lot number and manufacture date in MM/YYYY format are printed on a label under the dresser’s top panel. “Mainstays 9-Drawer Fabric Dresser” is also printed on the product order receipt and original packaging. The dresser was sold at Walmart stores nationwide and at Walmart.com from September 2023 through March 2026 for approximately $80.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
The dresser is unstable if not anchored to the wall and violates the mandatory federal safety standard required under the STURDY Act, which sets tip-over resistance requirements for clothing storage units. When not anchored, the dresser can tip forward — particularly if a child climbs on it or pulls open multiple drawers simultaneously to reach items on top or in upper drawers. A tipping dresser can pin a child underneath, causing entrapment that can result in serious injury or death. The CPSC has documented numerous fatalities and injuries from tip-over incidents involving furniture of this type, making STURDY Act compliance a serious consumer protection matter.
What Should You Do?
Immediately stop using the recalled dresser if it is not anchored to the wall, and move it to an area children cannot access. To receive a full refund from Walmart, return only the dresser’s drawers to any Walmart store — you do not need to return the entire unit. Dispose of the dresser’s frame in accordance with your local and state regulations. Contact Walmart at 800-925-6278, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. CT, or visit corporate.walmart.com/recalls.
