Play yards — the portable folding enclosures most parents use as travel cribs or safe play spaces — are trusted by millions of families, but the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that a growing number of play yards sold online violate mandatory federal safety standards and pose a suffocation or entrapment hazard to infants. CPSC has issued multiple recalls against play yards sold on Amazon in 2025 and 2026 for mattresses that are too thick, sides that are too short, or enclosed foot openings that allow an infant to become entrapped.
How Play Yards Become Dangerous
The mandatory federal Infant Sleep Products standard sets specific requirements for play yard mattress thickness and side height designed to keep infants safely contained and prevent positional asphyxia — a condition where an infant’s airway becomes blocked by their own body position. When a mattress is too thick, it raises the infant’s face closer to the side wall, making it easier for their face to press against the mesh or fabric. When the sides are too short, an infant can tumble partially over the edge and become entrapped in a position that blocks their airway.
CPSC has recently recalled play yards including Anna Queen brand portable play yards sold on Amazon for violations of the mandatory standard — specifically that infants can become entrapped under the mattress or between the side of the play yard and the mattress.
What You Should Do
- Check SaferProducts.gov to verify whether your play yard brand and model has been recalled.
- If your play yard was purchased through Amazon from an unknown or unfamiliar seller, be especially cautious and verify compliance.
- Never add extra padding, blankets, or mattress toppers to a play yard sleep surface.
- Ensure the play yard mattress fits snugly with no gaps between the mattress edge and the play yard walls.
- Always place infants on their back to sleep on the firm, flat mattress that came with the play yard.
